Approach

Being a student isn’t always easy. There are times when a student gets overwhelmed and does not know how to perform at their best. Those are the times a student needs some relief, someone who’s warmed up, ready to enter the game and get things back on course. Times like this:

  • Research paper due in four weeks, no ideas on what to write, what to research.

  • Finals coming up, C average in two courses—hate ‘em both—pressure’s on.

  • College admissions essay. I hate writing about myself.

  • Class presentation on the Dred Scott Decision next week and I don’t know how to present.

  • Classmates are coming over to study and I’m not ready ‘cause I hate this stuff.

  • What does the Virginia Plan have to do with anything if it was never made law?!

  • I hate citing sources! It’s so confusing!

  • My notes suck, I’ve got nothing to study with!

Late innings in a one-run ballgame, runners on first and third—no outs. Time for a call to the bullpen, where Bullpen Tutoring is ready.

Students (and their parents) choose tutoring for different reasons, and Bullpen Tutoring customizes its services to each student’s needs.

If the issue is help on a specific assignment or test, Bullpen Tutoring works with students to better understand the material being covered and how to communicate their knowledge, whether on a paper or an exam. Sometimes students are looking for more applied, general support—help with motivation,
studying, class preparation, test taking, note taking, or other academic skills. Bullpen Tutoring prepares comprehensive, ongoing support for the student, starting from where they are now and increasing their confidence, developing their skills, and preparing them to succeed on their own in the classroom.

For the student who is seeking a thorough, comprehensive approach to support, an evaluation of the student’s needs involves discussing learning objectives, education goals, and commitments to activities and responsibilities outside the classroom, and then determination of how each individual can manage pressure, time constraints, people’s expectations, and personal motivation.

Bullpen Tutoring specializes in the humanities, which can be particularly frustrating for students with the emphases on higher-order reasoning, critical thinking, argumentation, analysis of varying perspectives, and written articulation. N Tutoring works with students to help them successfully address how to cope with deadlines, undertake tasks in a systematic way, and look at assignments with various perspectives so they are able to own their work and craft it in ways they might not have considered.

In the end, any student who wants to learn can; any student who seeks to improve and wants help, will. Bullpen Tutoring both works with those who are all in and those who aren’t yet sure what all in means, are adrift in their motivation, and are pulled in various directions by life’s demands.
